Resizing a photograph or resizing an image is something we all need to learn to do at some point in our lives, so let’s get on with it.
One thing to note when resizing a photo or image is that it’s always better to size down than to size up. The image’s quality will diminish the larger it gets but when you’re sizing down the quality of the image shouldn’t be affected.
The first thing you need to do is open a file in Photoshop that you want to work with. You should see something similar to this:
This image is a little bit too big, so we’re going to size it down to about half it’s size.
Click on “Image” at the top of the screen, then find the “Image Size…” option
Next a box will appear with a few different options.
The first thing you should do is check the box at the bottom of the window that says “Constrain Proportions”. If that box is checked the the image will stay in proportion, meaning if you change the height, the width will automatically adjust and if you change the width the height will automatically adjust. This is important so that your image won’t skew.
At the top of the box the first option is titled “Pixel Dimensions”. There are two drop down boxes to the right which allow you to select either “pixels” or “percent”.
For this image we decided we wanted it to be about half the size so we’ll select “percent” in both drop down boxes.
You will notice the number’s in the left box both change automatically to 100 (because the image is currently 100% of it’s size). I am going to change them to 50 so that the image will end up 50% of it’s original size.
If you have a specific pixel size you can enter it just the same way by selecting the “pixels” option instead of “percent” and entering the pixel number in the box to the left.
Once you are done, click “Ok”
Your image should appear in it’s new size on your screen like this
Congratulations! You can now resize an image in Photoshop!
